Sahasrara "Crown" Chakra

The crown or sahsrara chakra, meaning thousand petaled not symbolized by any color or element. It is located on the very top of the head. Its Yantra looks like this:
It is associated with purity, intuitive knowing, spiritual development and the highest posible state of being. When unbalanced, one will be worried, disconnected, tired and have difficulty thinking for one's self. When balanced, one will be open like the lotus flower, cleansed, refreshed and will have reached a higher state of enlightenment than ever before. There are no foods to fuel your crown chakra, as the best way to balance it is fasting and detoxing. A good pose to meditate in to balance your Sahsrara chakra is the headstand pose, like this:

Ajna "Third Eye" Chakra

The Third Eye chakra or ajna, meaning command is symbolized by the color white and the element Mahatattva, which contains all of the elements. It is located in the brain at the point between the eyebrows. The Yantra symbol looks like this:
It is associated with sight, physical seeing as well as intuitive seeing, energies of clear vision, light and spirit. When unbalanced, one will have fuzzy thinking, be unintelligent, have headaches, anxiety, bad memory and poor visualization skills. When balanced, one will have clear thinking, be comfortable detached from worldly goods, trust your inner wisdom, have good visualization and even telepathy. Some foods that will fuel your Ajna chakra are dark blue fruits such as blueberries, grapes and blackberries. A good pose to open your third eye is the seated yoga mudra. it looks like this:

Vishuddha "Throat" Chakra

The throat chakra, or Vishuddha, meaning pure is symbolized by the color purple or turquoise and the element ether. Its is located behind the throat in the neck. Vishuddha is represented by this Yantra symbol.

It is associated with expression, communication, honest speech, the ability to receive and process information, inner truth and purification. When unbalanced one can excessively talk, give too much criticism, be overly opinionated, have a sore throat, be too shy or have headaches. When balanced, one will be confident in beliefs, have a capacity to listen and be heard, speaking truth, and having inner truth. Some foods to fuel your throat chakra are liquids such as juices and teas, tart fruits such as kiwis and lemons, and tree growing fruit. A good position to open your vishuddha chakra is the fish pose. it looks like this:

Anahata "Heart" Chakra

The heart chakra, or Anahata, meaning "unstruck" is represented by the color green and the element air. It is located at the heart's center of the body. It is symbolized by the star Yantra, which is composed of two overlapping triangles pointing in opposite directions, like so:
The anahata chakra is associated with love, compassion, emotions and healing. When blocked or unbalanced, one will feel grief, dispair, sadness, jealousy and uncompassionate.When open and balanced, one will be able to give and receive love, feel compassion and wholeness as well as be hopeful, sharing and inspired. Some foods that will help open and balance the heart chakra are leafy and air grown vegetables, green tea and green spices such as basil and sage. A position to open your Anahata is the camel pose, like so:

Manipura "Solar Plexus" Chakra

The solar plexus chakra, or Manipura, meaning "place of jems" is represented by the color yellow and the element, fire. It is located at the navel and symbolized by the Yantra symbol, the triangle, it looks like this:

The Manipura chakra is associated with identification, anger, self-esteem, will, power and self-love. When unbalanced or blocked, one will work too much, be judgmental, jealous, and insecure. When open and balanced, one will be confident, alert, outgoing, and cheerful. Some foods to help fuel and balance your solar plexus are grains, oats, dairy and ginger. A useful pose to open your manipura is the bow pose, like this:

Svadhisthana "Sacral" Chakra

The sacral chakra, or svadhisthana, meaning "one's own abode" is represented by the color orange and the element, water. It is located in the lower abdomen, above the genitals. It is symbolized by the yantra symbol, the crescent and the shape of a circle.

The sacral chakra is associated with emotional flow, sexuality, and intimacy. When blocked, or unbalanced, one will have sexual problems, fear of intimacy, or seeing sex as a purely physical act. When properly opened or balanced, one will feel open, friendly, be able to show healthy emotional feeling and will not feel guilt in pleasure. Some foods that will help to balance and fuel your sacral chakra are sweet foods such as fruits, honey, vanilla as well as cinnamon. The cobra pose helps to open and balance your svadhisthana chakra.

Muladhara "Root" Chakra

The root chakra, known in Sanscrit as muladhara is represented by the color red and the element Earth, representing the groundedness of it. It is located at the base of the spine, in between the genitals and the anus. The Yantra symbol of the root chakra is the square, it looks like this.
Some associations with the muladhara chakra are balance, comfort, groundedness, and safety. When one's root chakra is unbalanced or blocked, they may feel uncomfortable, isolated, alone or have a sense of not belonging and low self-esteem. However, when one balances their root or opens it, they will feel grounded, safe and comfortable everywhere. To help balance this chakra, one can eat rooted vegetables to connect to the rootedness of muladhara, as well as red fruits, protein and spicy foods. Some poses that help to open and strengthen your root chakra are bridge pose, squatting postures, and all other grounding postures.
